Indeed, the song that everyone knows, Funiculì-Funiculà, was written for this cable car that used to run up Vesuvius. That story is here. Before it was built, you either walked up or rode a mule. Mark Twain rode a mule. That story is here. After this picture was taken, they built a rail-line from the main rail line at a nearby town up to the white cable-car station you see here. It was very successful for a number of years. Long story, but here it is.
