This interesting map
shows Campania —the
area of the Bay of Naples— as it appeared in Roman times. Note
the main Roman roads coming from Rome and the north.
Naples, of course, was important, BUT not as important
as Pozzuoli (identified as
"Puteoli" on the map (with the old Greek name of
"Dicaearchia" below it in parentheses). There are, in
fact, separate main roads leading to Cuma
on the coast and Puteoli, indicating the importance of
this area as the port for the Western
Imperial Fleet.
